Harry Maguire has insisted that the Manchester United dressing room has moved on from Lisandro Martínez’s outburst.
Martínez returned to the side as United drew 1-1 at Elland Road against Leeds United on Sunday, although he came off at half-time.
The Argentina defender had previously aimed a verbal tirade at director of football Jason Wilcox after United lost to Atletico Madrid in the Champions League. Martínez questioned the ambition of the club’s summer transfer business. He later apologized.
Maguire: “We have moved on”
“Obviously there has been a lot of noise around the club [in the past week], as there is every week, but more so [in the past week],” Maguire told Sky Sports after the Leeds draw, responding to a question about Martínez.
“Lisandro has come out and apologised. We have moved on from it.
“He played and I thought he was brilliant in the first half, credit to him. Fingers crossed that he hasn’t picked up a serious injury and we can have him back.”
Manager Michael Carrick previously said that Martínez’s rant was “really not a drama for us as a group.”
Dressing room spirit tested
Interviewers asked Maguire whether his teammate’s criticism had challenged the spirit in the dressing room. He said: “When you played for this club it is always tested, especially when you’re not winning football matches.
“We haven’t played anywhere near well enough to win as many football matches as we did last season.
“We get tested every week, and the boys have got to get used to that. They’ve got to find something within themselves to help the group.
“We’ll stick together, we’ll go again. We have got another big game on Wednesday and we look forward to it.”
United have only seven points from their first seven Premier League games of the season. Carrick has conceded that the situation “doesn’t look great.”
