Manchester United are reportedly interested in signing Newcastle United defender Lewis Hall, and Newcastle would demand more than £70 million to consider selling the England international. Michael Carrick is looking to strengthen his defensive options ahead of next summer’s transfer window.
Reports suggest the Red Devils remain keen to sign the 22-year-old, despite Newcastle’s determination to keep one of their most important players.
Hall could fill a key role for United
Hall has established himself as an impressive Premier League performer, attracting interest from several leading clubs with his technical ability, defensive awareness and attacking qualities.
Manchester United identified Hall as a priority target during the summer transfer window but ultimately chose to focus their resources on other areas of the squad. Their interest has not diminished, however, and the left-back remains high on their recruitment shortlist.
Carrick wants to improve his options on the left side of defence, and Luke Shaw’s fitness record has raised concerns about the club’s long-term plans in that position. Hall’s ability to contribute in possession and provide attacking support could make him an ideal addition at Old Trafford.
The defender has also reportedly remained open to joining United, which could encourage the Premier League club as it considers reviving its pursuit.
Newcastle set a high price
Convincing Newcastle to sanction a departure will not be straightforward. Newcastle would demand more than £70 million before considering a sale.
Hall recently signed a new contract that keeps him at St James’ Park until 2031. That deal strengthens Newcastle’s negotiating position and makes a transfer considerably more complicated.
The Tyneside club has little incentive to lose a key player midway through the campaign, so a January move is considered highly unlikely.
United to wait until next summer
Manchester United are therefore expected to keep monitoring Hall’s progress and could return with an offer next summer. Although Hall would strengthen their defence, Newcastle’s substantial asking price could prove a major obstacle.
With United planning further defensive reinforcements, Hall could remain a leading target, provided the two clubs can eventually reach an agreement.
