Michael Olise was sent off in the Champions League on Tuesday after picking up two yellow cards within seconds, and he will miss Bayern Munich’s next match against Arsenal.
Olise received his first booking for a tactical foul to stop a counterattack by Viking. While the referee was still showing that yellow card, he tossed the ball he was holding at Viking captain Zlatko Tripic‘s head. That earned him a second caution, and the home crowd in Stavanger cheered. It was the first senior red card of his career, and it earned the France international a one-match ban.
Bayern led 3-2 at the time, but the dismissal opened the door for Viking. In the 90th minute, Tripic crossed for Herman Haugen, who headed in the equalizer to salvage a 3-3 draw.
Bayern Fought Back Before Late Collapse
Bayern had trailed 2-0 before mounting a comeback. Harry Kane scored twice in quick succession in the second half, extending his run of scoring in consecutive Champions League games to nine. Luis Díaz had given Bayern the lead with a third goal just before Olise was sent off.
Kane said Olise would regret missing upcoming fixtures. “He’ll have to take responsibility obviously, he’ll have to learn from it,” Kane said. “It’s a shame because obviously we have big games coming up in the Champions League now and he’s going to be gutted to miss those games. But this is football. Sometimes mistakes can happen, it’s life.”
The draw interrupts Bayern’s momentum after a 5-0 win over Bodø/Glimt, another Norwegian side, to open their Champions League campaign last month. Kane acknowledged that his side deserved more. “We should have won the game with the second-half performance,” he said. “You take the point and you move on.”
